Martin Young began his musical life playing the classical guitar switching to bass when an opportunity arose to play in a local dance band.
At age 16 he was playing big-band charts in the Lancashire-based band; Sounds 18. Martin also played with pianist Norman Bolton’s small group which included well-known musicians from the North West, including tenorist Harold Salisbury, Hollies drummer Bobby Elliott, and ex- Nucleus guitarist Kenny Shaw.
After moving to Bath In 1990 he collaborated with Rob Brian and pianist John Paul Gard in tenor player Danny Sheppard’s quartet and, with singer Joan Davis. Martin has also played at the 606 club and other notable Jazz Venues with Bristol-based musicians Dave Betts and Mat Sibley. Since 2004 has been based in West London and plays regularly with local jazz musicians at venues including the Bulls Head and the Pheasantry. He is also the regular bassist for SoulTrippers.
